On March 18th, the C190 Arc Task Force hosted a parallel event at the NGO CSW69 Forum held at the Church Center for the United Nations.
The Task Force includes women leaders from 12 organizations from global north and south representing both labor and gender justice institutions including Global Labor Justice (GLJ), Solidarity Center, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF), UNI Global Union, Worker Rights Consortium (WRC), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity (BCWS), Feminist Alliance for Rights (FAR), Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA), StreetNet International and United Domestic Workers of America (UDW). The Task Force is convened and coordinated by GLJ.
The event “ILO Convention 190 and Beijing+30: Bridging Gender and Labor,” featured Annanya Bhattacharjee, International Coordinator, Asia Floor Wage Alliance; Rola Abimourched, Deputy Director of Investigations and Gender Equity, Worker Rights Consortium; Pinar Fulya Ӧzcan, International Secretary and President of Women’s Committee in Textile, Garment and Leather Trade Union Öz İplik-İş, Türkiye; Adriana Paz Ramirez, General Secretary, International Domestic Workers Federation; Iris Mungia, Former Secretary of Women, Federation of Industrial Agricultural Unions, Honduras; Alejandra Ancheita, Executive Director ProDESC (The Economic Social and Cultural Rights Project) and Initiative for Transnational Justice, Mexico; Jennifer (JJ) Rosenbaum, Executive Director, Global Labor Justice; Kirshanti Dharmaraj, Transnational Lead, Feminist Alliance for Rights and Senior Strategist, C190 Arc; Adra Manasi, Senior Program Coordinator, Global Labor Justice and Coordinator of the C190 Arc Task Force.
A year ago a group of organizations met at CSW and shared a goal of using the fifth anniversary of the adoption of C190 to build impact and movement.
“Together we have shared best practices; encouraged each other; and fundamentally brought momentum to C190 definitions, best practices, and commitments in critical ways. First we have shown that even as the fastest ratified convention in ILO history, C190 comes to life through implementation beyond ratification through the work of unions and womens’ organizations including all of us. Second, we have highlighted how the concept of the world work, which includes shop floors, fields, homes, hostels, transport, and the complex geography of where we must engage to defend rights and build power,” said GLJ Executive Director Jennifer (JJ) Rosenbaum.
Task Force discussions informed the new policy brief from GLJ, AFWA and FAR “Women on the Rise, Gendering the World of Work,” which informed the discussions for the high level political statement this year. The brief also is a tool with recommendations that can be used going forward for advocacy on national commitments to Beijing+30 implementation; national implementation of SDG commitments; and inputs to the brief coming out this year from the UN Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls.
